Microwave makes a crackling or popping sound and visible sparks (arcing) appear inside the cavity during cooking.

This repair may involve working with high voltage components or water connections. Always unplug the appliance before removing any panels.
If you are not confident in your ability to perform this repair safely, we strongly recommend contacting a professional technician.
Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Immediately stop the microwave and unplug it if you see sparks. Do not continue to run the unit while arcing occurs.
Steps to eliminate arcing:
- 1. Remove metal objects: Ensure there is no metal trim, foil, twist ties, or non-microwave-safe dishware inside.
- 2. Inspect waveguide cover: Check the mica cover for burn marks, holes, or heavy grease. Replace if damaged; clean gently if only lightly soiled.
- 3. Check cavity surfaces: Look for chipped or cracked enamel exposing bare metal. Small chips can sometimes be covered with microwave-safe cavity paint (technician-applied).
- 4. Use proper cookware: Only use microwave-safe glass, ceramic, or plastic containers as specified by Sage.
If arcing continues after removing metal and replacing a damaged waveguide cover, internal components such as the magnetron antenna or waveguide may be damaged and require professional service.
