Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety Warning: High voltage present inside microwave. Do not touch internal components unless you are trained and the unit is unplugged and properly discharged.
User-level checks:
- Unplug the microwave and let it cool for at least 30 minutes.
- Inspect the rear and side ventilation openings for dust, grease, or objects blocking airflow. Clean vents with a soft brush and vacuum.
- Ensure there is at least the manufacturer-recommended clearance (typically 3–4 inches) around the sides, top, and rear of the microwave.
- Remove and clean the grease filters (for over-the-range models) with warm soapy water; let them dry completely before reinstalling.
Technical checks (for professionals):
- With the cabinet removed and unit unplugged, inspect the cooling fan motor and fan blade for obstruction or failure. Spin the blade by hand; it should move freely.
- Test the magnetron thermal cut-out (TCO) for continuity. Replace if open.
- If the TCO is repeatedly tripping and airflow is normal, test and replace the magnetron as needed.
After clearing obstructions and replacing any failed components, reassemble and test with a short 1-minute heating cycle.
