Possible Causes
Blocked air vents, failed cavity thermostat, running empty for extended time, defective cooling fan motor
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the microwave and allow it to cool completely before inspection.
Immediate actions:
- 1. Allow cooling: Leave the door open and let the unit sit unplugged for 30–60 minutes to allow the cavity thermostat to reset (if it is a resettable type).
- 2. Check for misuse: Ensure the microwave was not run empty or with metal containers, which can cause overheating.
- 3. Inspect vents: Check all external vents for obstructions (plastic bags, boxes, grease buildup). Clean with a soft brush and ensure adequate clearance around the unit.
Further checks (advanced):
- Remove the outer cover (after unplugging) and locate the cavity thermostat / thermal cut-out mounted on the top or side of the cavity.
- Test the thermostat for continuity at room temperature. If it remains open after cooling, it has failed and must be replaced.
- Verify the cooling fan motor runs whenever the magnetron is energized. If the fan is seized or not powered, replace or repair as needed.
Note: Repeated E5 errors indicate a cooling or usage problem. Correct any airflow issues before replacing parts.
