Possible Causes
Metal object or foil in cavity, Damaged or burned waveguide cover, Grease or food buildup on cavity walls, Exposed metal from chipped cavity paint
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Stop the microwave immediately and unplug it if you see sparks or arcing.
- Remove metal: Ensure no metal utensils, foil, or twist ties are inside the Viking microwave.
- Inspect waveguide cover: Locate the mica or plastic waveguide cover on the side or top interior wall. If it is burned, cracked, or has holes, it must be replaced.
- Clean cavity: Thoroughly clean the interior, especially around the waveguide cover, to remove grease and food splatter that can cause arcing.
- Touch up paint: If cavity paint is chipped down to bare metal, use a microwave-safe cavity touch-up paint to cover exposed metal after cleaning and drying.
- Replace waveguide cover: Install a new Viking waveguide cover cut to the correct size and shape for your model.
- Test carefully: After repairs, test with a cup of water and observe for any further arcing.
