Microwave displays F5 and may not start or may stop mid-cycle
Safety Warning
This repair may involve working with high voltage components or water connections. Always unplug the appliance before removing any panels.
If you are not confident in your ability to perform this repair safely, we strongly recommend contacting a professional technician.
Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the microwave and allow several minutes for internal capacitors to discharge. Do not touch high-voltage components.
- Power cycle: Disconnect power for 5–10 minutes, then reconnect and test. If F5 returns immediately, proceed.
- Access control board: Remove the outer cabinet and control panel to expose the electronic control board.
- Visual inspection: Look for burnt spots, cracked solder joints, or melted relay cases on the board.
- Listen for relay click: When starting a cook cycle (with cabinet reinstalled for safety), listen for the relay click. No click or repeated clicking may indicate a bad relay.
- Replace control board: Whirlpool typically does not support field replacement of individual relays. Replace the entire electronic control board with the correct part number for your model.
Note: Because this involves line-voltage switching, if you are not experienced with electrical repairs, contact a professional technician.
