Possible Causes
Damaged waveguide cover, Exposed metal from chipped cavity paint, Metal object or twist-tie in cavity, Food residue carbonized on walls
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Immediately stop the microwave and unplug it if you see smoke or arcing. Do not continue to operate until the cause is corrected.
- Inspect interior: Look for metal objects, foil, or twist-ties left in the cavity. Remove any foreign objects.
- Check waveguide cover: The mica or plastic cover on the side wall can become burned or cracked. Replace it if damaged using a Whirlpool-compatible waveguide cover.
- Clean thoroughly: Remove all grease and burnt food from the walls, ceiling, and floor. Carbonized residue can cause arcing.
- Touch-up paint: If cavity paint is chipped down to bare metal, use microwave-safe cavity touch-up paint to cover exposed metal after cleaning and drying.
- Persistent smell or damage: If arcing persists or you see damage near the magnetron antenna, have a technician inspect the unit.
