Possible Causes

Inner pot not seated properly on heater plate, Cooking with insufficient liquid causing dry heating, Heavy carbonized food residue on heater plate, Faulty thermal fuse or thermostat opening prematurely

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the cooker and allow it to cool fully. Do not add water to a hot dry pot; allow it to cool first to avoid warping.

Steps to resolve:

  • Remove the inner pot and inspect the bottom for warping, dents, or burnt-on residue. Clean thoroughly with a non-abrasive scrubber so the bottom is smooth and flat.
  • Inspect the heater plate surface inside the cooker for burnt food, discoloration, or debris. Wipe clean with a damp cloth and dry completely.
  • Ensure the inner pot sits flat and makes full contact with the heater plate. If it rocks or does not sit evenly, the pot may be warped and should be replaced.
  • When cooking, always use at least the minimum liquid level specified in the Starfrit manual (typically 1–2 cups depending on recipe).
  • If E3 occurs even with proper liquid and a clean pot, access the bottom of the unit and inspect the thermal fuse and thermostat mounted near the heater plate. A weak thermostat may open too early and require replacement.

Warning: Never bypass the thermal fuse or thermostat; they are critical safety components.
