Possible Causes

Faulty mechanical thermostat (traditional AGA module), misreading electronic temperature sensor, stuck relay on control PCB, incorrect installation of replacement sensor

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn off the oven at the mains or fuel supply. Allow it to cool before testing.

  • Verify with thermometer: Place an accurate oven thermometer in the center of the cavity and compare actual temperature to the set temperature.
  • Check sensor mounting: Ensure the electronic sensor probe is correctly positioned and not touching the oven wall or element, which can cause false readings.
  • Inspect thermostat phial (if fitted): On some AGA modules, a capillary thermostat bulb is clipped inside the cavity. Confirm it is secure and not damaged.
  • Test thermostat/sensor: For mechanical thermostats, check continuity and switching behavior as the oven warms (requires controlled heating and a multimeter). For electronic sensors, compare resistance at known temperatures to AGA specifications.
  • Replace faulty control: If the thermostat or sensor is out of spec, replace it. If the sensor is good but the oven still overheats, the control PCB relay may be stuck closed and the board should be replaced.
