Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off gas at the shutoff valve and disconnect power before servicing. If you smell strong gas, ventilate the area and do not ignite any flames; contact your gas supplier.
- Verify gas supply: Ensure the manual gas shutoff valve to the range is fully open. Confirm other gas appliances work.
- Observe igniter: Restore power and start a bake cycle. Look through the oven bottom panel at the burner. The hot surface igniter should glow bright orange within 30–60 seconds. If it does not glow, it is likely defective.
- Check igniter resistance: With power off, disconnect the igniter and measure resistance. An open circuit indicates failure. Replace with the correct American Range igniter type (silicon carbide or silicon nitride).
- Safety valve test: If the igniter glows but the burner never lights, the igniter may be weak (not drawing enough current to open the safety valve) or the valve is faulty. Replace the igniter first; if problem persists, test/replace the oven safety valve.
Warning: Never bypass safety devices or operate the oven with exposed gas fittings.
