Possible Causes

New oven insulation curing, Packing materials left in oven, Drip pans or cookware coatings overheating

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: If you suspect an electrical burning smell, turn off power immediately and do not use the oven until inspected.

  • Check for packaging: Remove all plastic, tape, zip ties, and cardboard from inside and around the oven cavity and storage drawer.
  • Initial burn-in: For new GE ovens, run an empty bake cycle at 400–450°F for 1–2 hours with good ventilation to burn off insulation odors.
  • Inspect wiring: If the smell is sharp and electrical, unplug or turn off the breaker and inspect behind the range or rear panel for burned wires or components. Replace any damaged wiring or parts.
