Possible Causes

Shorted temperature sensor, Stuck mechanical thermostat contacts, Welded heater relay on PCB, Failed safety thermostat not tripping

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Turn off the oven and isolate from mains immediately to prevent fire risk.

  • Test temperature sensor: Remove and measure resistance at room temperature. A very low resistance or short indicates failure; replace the sensor.
  • Mechanical thermostat (if fitted): On older Hotpoint models with a capillary thermostat, test continuity across the thermostat. If it remains closed regardless of knob position, replace the thermostat.
  • Check heater relay: Inspect the main PCB for a heater relay stuck closed (contacts welded). Replace the PCB if the relay is permanently energising the element.
  • Verify safety thermostat: Ensure the overheat stat is functional; replace if it does not open at high temperature.
