On a Magic Chef gas range, oven will not ignite; you may smell gas briefly but no flame appears.

Safety first: If you smell strong gas, turn off the oven, ventilate the area, and shut off the gas supply. Do not attempt repeated ignition.

• Observe igniter: With the oven set to bake, look through the broiler drawer or oven bottom panel. The hot surface igniter should glow bright orange within 30–60 seconds.
• Test igniter: If it does not glow or glows weakly and the burner never lights, replace the oven igniter. Even a glowing igniter can be too weak to open the safety valve.
• Check burner ports: Clean any debris or spills from the burner ports with a soft brush.
• Valve testing (advanced): If a new igniter glows but the burner still does not light, the oven safety valve may be defective and should be tested and replaced by a qualified technician.
