Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power and shut off the gas supply before working on a gas oven. Ventilate the area if you smell gas and do not create sparks.
Check gas supply:
- Verify the gas shutoff valve to the oven is fully open.
- If other gas appliances are not working, contact your gas supplier.
Inspect igniter and flame sensor:
- Remove the oven bottom panel to access the bake burner and igniter.
- Visually inspect the igniter for cracks or white spots.
- Turn power back on briefly and start a bake cycle; observe if the igniter glows. If it does not glow or glows very weakly, replace the bake igniter.
- Clean the flame sensor (if separate) with fine emery cloth to remove oxidation.
Check gas valve and wiring:
- If the igniter glows strongly but the burner never lights, the gas valve or its coil may be faulty.
- Test the gas valve coil resistance per the service manual.
- If out of spec, replace the gas safety valve.
Gas work can be hazardous; if unsure, contact a qualified gas appliance technician.
