Possible Causes

Open-circuit grill heating element, burnt element terminals, loose wiring at element, failed grill relay/triac on main control board

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn off power at the breaker and allow the oven to cool completely.

  • Visual inspection of grill element: Open the door and inspect the top grill element for visible breaks, blisters, or burn marks. Any visible damage indicates replacement is required.
  • Check terminals: Remove the oven from the cabinet if necessary and access the rear panel. Locate the grill element terminals and inspect for heat damage or loose spade connectors. Tighten or replace connectors as needed.
  • Test continuity: Disconnect the wires from the grill element and measure resistance across the element with a multimeter. An open circuit (OL) means the element is faulty and must be replaced with a Smeg-compatible grill element.
  • Control board check: If the element tests good but does not heat and Er08 appears, the grill relay or triac on the main control board may have failed. Check for output voltage to the element when grill is selected (only if you are qualified to work on live circuits). If no voltage is present, replace the main control board.
