Possible Causes

Stuck door lock motor, jammed lock mechanism, failed door lock microswitch, control board not sending unlock signal

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Disconnect the oven from mains power. Ensure the oven cavity is cool before attempting any manual release.

  • Wait and power reset: Sometimes the door remains locked until the sensor reads a safe temperature. Wait at least 30–60 minutes, then cycle power at the breaker and see if the lock releases.
  • Manual release: Consult the user manual for the model-specific emergency door release procedure. Some Smeg ovens have a manual release lever accessible from the top or through the front panel.
  • Inspect lock assembly: Remove the top panel to access the door lock motor and linkage. Check for mechanical obstruction or bent parts. Lubricate lightly with high-temperature-safe lubricant if binding is observed (avoid excess).
  • Test motor and switches: With power disconnected, test the lock motor coil for continuity and the microswitches for correct operation. Replace the complete lock assembly if any component is defective.
  • Control board check: If the lock hardware is good but does not receive power to unlock, the main control board may be faulty and require replacement.
