Possible Causes
Shorted thermostat contacts (on mechanical models), failed temperature sensor reading too low, stuck heating relay on main control board
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Immediately switch off the oven and isolate from mains power. Do not continue using an oven that overheats.
- Check temperature setting and mode: Confirm that the correct function and temperature are selected and that the grill is not inadvertently on.
- Test thermostat (mechanical): On knob-controlled Smeg ovens, remove the control panel and test the thermostat contacts for proper opening at set temperatures. Replace the thermostat if it remains closed.
- Test sensor (electronic): Measure the NTC sensor resistance and compare with specifications. Replace if it reads significantly lower than expected at room temperature.
- Inspect control board relays: Look for a relay that remains stuck closed (contacts welded). Replace the main control board if a heating relay is stuck.
