Possible Causes
Failed high-limit thermostat, Open thermal fuse in self-clean circuit, Overheating due to blocked vents, Faulty temperature sensor at high temperatures
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Self-clean cycles reach extremely high temperatures. Ensure the oven is completely cool and power is off before servicing.
- Check vents: Verify that the oven cooling vents are not blocked by cabinetry, foil, or other obstructions. Proper airflow is critical during self-clean.
- Inspect high-limit thermostat: Access the top or rear of the oven to locate the high-limit thermostat or thermal cutoff. Look for signs of overheating or discoloration.
- Test continuity: With power off, test the high-limit thermostat and any thermal fuses for continuity. An open device will prevent self-clean from operating and must be replaced with the correct OEM part.
- Sensor performance: If the oven overheats during self-clean, test the temperature sensor resistance at room temperature and compare to specifications. Replace if out of range.
- Control board: If all safety devices and sensor are good, the control board may be misreading temperature or mismanaging the self-clean cycle and may need replacement.
