Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off gas supply at the shutoff valve and disconnect power before servicing. If you smell strong gas, ventilate the area and do not attempt to light the oven.
- Verify gas supply: Ensure the manual gas shutoff valve to the range is fully open and other gas appliances are working.
- Observe ignition: With power on and gas available, start a bake cycle and watch through the oven window. A hot surface igniter should glow bright orange; a spark igniter should produce rapid clicking sparks.
- Test hot surface igniter: If it glows but the burner does not light, the igniter may be too weak to open the safety valve. With power off, measure igniter resistance; a very high or open reading indicates failure. Replace the bake igniter.
- Check spark igniter and electrode: On spark systems, inspect the electrode near the burner for cracks or misalignment. Clean any debris and ensure a 1/8–3/16 inch gap to the burner. Replace the spark igniter assembly if no spark is produced.
- Oven safety valve: If a strong igniter is present but no gas flows, the oven safety valve may be defective and should be replaced by a qualified technician.
Gas work can be hazardous. If you are not experienced with gas appliances, have a licensed technician perform diagnosis and repair.
