Possible Causes

Failed electronic oven control board, Shorted keypad membrane on control panel, Corroded or loose ribbon cable between keypad and control, Power surge damage to control

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Disconnect power at the breaker before removing any panels. High voltage is present even when the oven is off.

  • Power reset: Turn the range/oven breaker OFF for 5 minutes, then turn it back ON. If F1 returns immediately, the control or keypad is likely faulty.
  • Check keypad ribbon: Remove the control panel back cover. Inspect the flat ribbon cable from the keypad to the electronic oven control (EOC) for corrosion, burns, or kinks. Reseat the ribbon by unplugging and firmly reconnecting it.
  • Keypad test: If the code appears when pressing certain keys, the touchpad membrane is likely shorted. Try operating the oven without pressing any keys for several minutes to see if F1 appears on its own.
  • Replace failed component: If reseating the ribbon and power reset do not help, replace the control panel/touchpad assembly or the electronic oven control board as a matched set per Whirlpool service manual. Label and transfer each wire one at a time.
