Possible Causes
Food or grease buildup on elements, Spilled food on oven floor, Insulation or wiring overheating, Failing fan motor
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: If you see flames or heavy smoke, turn off the oven immediately and keep the door closed to smother flames. If in doubt, call emergency services.
- Step 1 – Inspect interior: Once cool, inspect the oven cavity, elements, and racks for heavy grease or burnt-on spills. Clean thoroughly with appropriate oven cleaners (avoid spraying directly on elements or sensors).
- Step 2 – Check around elements: Look for signs of arcing or burning around the elements and their terminals. Replace any element with burn marks or cracks.
- Step 3 – Listen for fan noise: A failing fan motor can overheat and produce a burning smell. Inspect and replace the fan motor if noisy or hot to the touch.
- Step 4 – Monitor after cleaning: Run the oven empty at a moderate temperature for 20–30 minutes to burn off any remaining residue. If smoke or smell persists, have a technician inspect internal wiring and insulation.
Warning: Do not ignore persistent burning smells; they may indicate a serious electrical or insulation problem.
