Possible Causes

Broken RTD temperature probe wire, Disconnected RTD plug at control board, Failed RTD temperature probe, Damaged wiring harness between RTD and controller

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the Broil King Crown Pellet grill from power and ensure the unit is completely cool before working inside the cabinet.

  • Check the RTD probe connection: Locate the temperature probe inside the cook chamber (usually a small metal rod on the side wall). Follow its wires through the rear of the grill to the control board. Make sure the plug is fully seated on the controller and not corroded or burnt.
  • Inspect the probe wire: Look for cuts, melted insulation, or pinch points where the lid or body may have crushed the cable. If damaged, the probe must be replaced.
  • Test continuity (if you have a meter): Disconnect the RTD from the controller and measure resistance across the two probe leads. An open (OL) reading indicates a failed probe.
  • Replace the RTD probe: If open or visibly damaged, remove the mounting screw(s) holding the probe in the cook chamber, gently pull the wire through, and install a new Broil King Crown Pellet RTD temperature probe, routing the wire away from hot or sharp areas.
  • Reconnect and test: Reconnect the grill to power, clear the error by cycling power, and start the grill. If Er1 persists with a new probe, the main control board may be faulty and should be evaluated by a technician.
