Possible Causes
RTD probe wires shorted together, Moisture inside RTD connector, Melted RTD cable insulation contacting metal, Failed RTD temperature probe
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Disconnect power and allow the grill to cool completely.
- Inspect the RTD cable: Follow the probe wire from the cook chamber to the controller. Look for melted spots where the cable may have touched the fire pot, exhaust, or hot metal. Any exposed conductors can cause a short.
- Check the connector: Unplug the RTD from the control board. Inspect for moisture, grease, or corrosion. Clean gently with electrical contact cleaner and let it dry fully.
- Check for pinched wire: Ensure the wire is not crushed between panels or under the hopper lid. Reroute the cable if necessary.
- Replace the RTD probe: If the cable is melted or the error persists after cleaning and rerouting, install a new Broil King Crown Pellet RTD temperature probe.
- Controller check: If a known-good probe still triggers Er2, the main control board may have an internal fault and should be replaced by a qualified technician.
