Possible Causes

Grease fire in cook chamber, Excessive pellet feed causing runaway temperature, RTD probe mispositioned near fire pot, Faulty control board temperature regulation

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: If there is any sign of active fire or heavy smoke, keep the lid closed, unplug the grill, and have a fire extinguisher ready. Do not use water on a grease fire.

  • Allow full cool-down: Leave the lid closed until the grill is completely cool. Do not restart until all flames are out and metal surfaces are safe to touch.
  • Inspect for grease buildup: Remove grates, heat diffuser, and drip tray. Clean out grease, ash, and debris from the drip tray, grease channel, and fire pot. Heavy grease buildup can cause flare-ups and over-temp.
  • Check RTD probe position: Ensure the temperature probe is firmly mounted on the side wall and not bent toward the fire pot or touching metal surfaces that overheat.
  • Verify pellet feed: Confirm that the auger is not jammed partially open and that the control is set to a reasonable temperature. Excessive manual priming of pellets can also cause over-firing.
  • Restart procedure: After cleaning and inspection, plug the grill back in, clear the error by cycling power, and start on a low setting to confirm stable operation.
  • Service if recurring: If Er4 repeats without obvious cause, the control board or RTD may be misreading temperature and should be checked or replaced by a technician.
