Possible Causes
Damaged RTD temperature probe wire, Disconnected RTD plug at control board, Failed RTD temperature probe, Corroded connector at RTD harness
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the grill from power and allow it to cool completely before opening any panels.
- Inspect the RTD probe: Locate the RTD temperature probe inside the cook box (usually a small metal probe on the side wall). Check that the probe is not bent, broken, or heavily coated in grease. Gently clean with a non-abrasive pad if dirty.
- Check wiring and connector: Follow the RTD wires from the probe into the cabinet to the main control board. Ensure the plug is fully seated on the control board and that no wires are pinched, cut, or melted near the firepot or exhaust.
- Test continuity (if you have a meter): With the grill unplugged, disconnect the RTD from the board and measure resistance across the two RTD leads. A typical RTD will show a finite resistance (often 100–2000 Ω depending on type). An open (OL) reading indicates a failed probe.
- Reseat or replace: Reseat the connector firmly. If the error persists and the probe tests open or visually appears damaged, replace the RTD temperature probe with a Broil King-compatible RTD sensor.
- Power cycle: After reconnecting, plug the grill back in, clear the error by turning the controller off and on, and attempt to start again.
