Possible Causes
RTD probe wires shorted together, Melted RTD insulation near firebox, Moisture inside RTD connector, Failed RTD probe element
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Disconnect power and let the grill cool completely.
- Visual inspection: Locate the RTD probe and follow its cable. Look for melted insulation, bare wires touching each other, or contact with the metal body of the grill.
- Check connector: Unplug the RTD from the control board. Inspect the connector for moisture, corrosion, or bent pins. Dry any moisture and clean light corrosion with electrical contact cleaner.
- Meter test: With the RTD disconnected, measure resistance between each RTD lead and the metal sheath or grill body. There should be no continuity. If there is continuity (short to ground) or extremely low resistance between the two leads, the probe is shorted.
- Correct routing: Reroute the RTD cable away from hot surfaces and sharp edges. Use high-temp cable ties if needed.
- Replace if shorted: If the probe is shorted or damaged, install a new Broil King-compatible RTD temperature probe and reconnect to the control board.
- Restart: Plug the grill back in and restart. If Er2 persists, the control board RTD input may be damaged and require replacement.
