Possible Causes
Grease fire in cook box, Excessive pellet feed causing runaway temperature, Faulty RTD probe reading too high, Control board calibration error
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn the grill off, unplug it, and keep the lid closed if there is an active flare-up. Have a fire extinguisher rated for grease fires nearby. Do not use water on a grease fire.
- Check for grease fire: Once safe and cooled, open the lid and inspect for signs of a grease fire (heavy soot, charred grease, warped components). Clean out all grease and ash from the cook box, drip tray, and grease channels.
- Inspect pellet feed: Ensure the auger is not overfeeding pellets. Verify that the firepot is not overflowing with unburned pellets. Remove excess pellets and ash.
- Verify RTD placement: Confirm the RTD probe is properly mounted and not touching the grate or directly above the firepot, which can cause artificially high readings.
- Clean RTD: Gently clean the RTD probe of heavy carbon buildup, which can affect readings.
- Restart on low setting: After cleaning, restart the grill on a low temperature setting and monitor. If Er3 recurs without obvious overheating, the RTD or control board may be faulty and should be tested or replaced.
