Possible Causes

Failed hot rod igniter, No pellets in hopper, Blocked auger or firepot, Faulty combustion fan not supplying air

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the grill and allow it to cool. Remove all food from the cooking area.

  • Check fuel: Confirm there are dry, food-grade wood pellets in the hopper. Avoid damp or swollen pellets.
  • Inspect firepot: Remove grates and heat diffuser to access the firepot. Empty any excess ash or unburned pellets. The firepot air holes must be clear.
  • Verify igniter operation: With the firepot exposed, plug the grill in and start an ignition cycle while observing from a safe distance. The hot rod igniter (in the base of the firepot) should begin to glow red within a few minutes. If it does not glow, unplug the grill and plan to replace the igniter.
  • Check combustion fan: During startup, you should hear the combustion fan running and feel air movement in the firepot. If the fan is not running, inspect its wiring and connector at the control board.
  • Manual test: If the igniter is failed but the auger and fan work, you can test by manually lighting a small handful of pellets in the firepot with a fire starter, then restarting the grill with the igniter disconnected. This is only a temporary test, not a permanent solution.
  • Replace failed parts: Replace the hot rod igniter or combustion fan as needed with Broil King-compatible components.
