Possible Causes
Failed hot rod igniter, Loose igniter wiring at control board, Blown igniter fuse on control board
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the grill from power and allow it to cool completely before opening any panels.
- Check for obvious damage: Remove the cooking grates and heat diffuser to visually inspect the hot rod igniter in the fire pot. Look for cracks, breaks, or heavy corrosion.
- Inspect wiring: Access the control box (usually behind the side panel). Verify the igniter leads are firmly connected to the control board and not pinched or burned.
- Test igniter operation: With the fire pot empty and grill reassembled, plug in the grill and start an ignition cycle while observing the igniter through the fire pot (do not touch). Within a few minutes it should glow red. If it does not glow and ERR1 appears, the igniter is likely failed.
- Replace igniter: Unplug the grill again. Remove the mounting screw(s) holding the igniter in the fire pot, disconnect its wires at the control board, and install a new Char‑Griller compatible hot rod igniter in the same position, ensuring the tip sits centered in the fire pot holes. Reconnect wiring and secure all panels.
- Check fuses: If the new igniter still does not work, inspect the control board for an inline or onboard fuse for the igniter circuit and replace if blown. If fuses continue to blow, contact a technician as the board may be shorted.
