Possible Causes
Pellet dust buildup in auger tube, Dry or worn auger bushings, Slight auger misalignment, Foreign object in auger (screws, stones, etc.)
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the grill and allow it to cool before disassembling the auger system.
- Step 1 – Empty hopper: Remove all pellets and vacuum out dust from the hopper and auger intake.
- Step 2 – Remove auger: Access the auger motor, disconnect it, and slide the auger out from the fire pot side. Note orientation for reassembly.
- Step 3 – Clean and inspect: Remove pellet dust and debris from the auger and tube. Look for foreign objects or burrs on the auger flighting. Smooth any sharp edges with fine sandpaper.
- Step 4 – Lubricate bushings (if allowed): If your Cuisinart model uses external bushings that are accessible, apply a small amount of high‑temperature, food‑safe lubricant to the bearing surfaces. Do not apply lubricant inside the auger tube where it contacts pellets.
- Step 5 – Reassemble and test: Reinstall the auger and motor, ensuring proper alignment. Refill with fresh pellets and run the grill, listening for noise reduction. If grinding persists, the auger motor gearbox may be failing and should be replaced.
