Possible Causes
RTD probe wires shorted together, Moisture inside RTD connector, Melted RTD cable insulation contacting metal body, Failed RTD sensor
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Disconnect power and let the grill cool completely before servicing.
- Step 1 – Inspect RTD cable for damage: Trace the RTD temperature probe cable from the inside of the cook chamber to the control box. Look for melted spots where the cable may have touched the fire pot or heat shield, or where the insulation is worn through and touching the metal body.
- Step 2 – Check for moisture: If the grill has been stored outdoors, condensation can enter the RTD connector. Open the controller area and inspect the RTD plug on the control board. If it is damp, dry it thoroughly with a clean cloth and allow it to air dry before reassembly.
- Step 3 – Electrical test: With the grill unplugged, disconnect the RTD from the control board and measure resistance between each RTD lead and the metal probe body or grill chassis. Any reading close to 0 ohms indicates a short. Also measure between the two RTD leads; a reading near 0 ohms (instead of a few kΩ) indicates an internal short.
- Step 4 – Replace shorted RTD: If the RTD is shorted or the cable insulation is compromised, replace it with a Cuisinart‑compatible RTD temperature probe assembly. Route the new cable away from hot surfaces and sharp edges, securing it with high‑temperature zip ties if needed.
- Step 5 – Reconnect and test: Reconnect the RTD to the control board, reinstall the controller, plug in the grill, and power on. Confirm that Er2 no longer appears and that the temperature reading is stable.
