Possible Causes
Grease fire in cook chamber, Excessive pellet feed causing runaway temperature, Faulty control board temperature regulation, RTD probe mispositioned near fire pot
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: If you suspect a grease fire, keep the lid closed, turn the grill off, and unplug it. Do not open the lid until flames subside. Keep a Class B fire extinguisher nearby; never use water on a grease fire.
- Step 1 – Allow full cool‑down: Leave the grill unplugged until it is completely cool to the touch inside and out.
- Step 2 – Clean grease and ash: Remove grates, drip tray, and heat baffle. Thoroughly clean out grease buildup from the drip tray, grease channel, and bucket. Vacuum ash from the fire pot and bottom of the barrel using a shop vac rated for ash (only when everything is cold).
- Step 3 – Check RTD placement: Verify that the RTD temperature probe is mounted in its factory location on the side wall and not bent toward the fire pot or heat deflector, which can cause false high readings.
- Step 4 – Inspect pellet feed: Confirm that the auger is not overfeeding pellets. With the grill running on a low setting, observe the fire pot through the grates: the flame should be steady, not roaring. If pellets are piling up and flaring, the controller or auger timing may be faulty.
- Step 5 – Controller reset: After cleaning, plug the grill back in and power on. Set to a low temperature (e.g., 225°F) and monitor. If Er3 reappears without a grease fire or obvious overheat, the control board’s high‑limit circuit may be defective and should be replaced.
