Possible Causes

Burned out hot rod igniter, Loose igniter connection at control board, Damaged igniter wiring near fire pot, Blown igniter fuse on control board (if equipped)

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the grill and ensure the fire pot and interior are completely cool before working near the igniter.

  • Step 1 – Access the fire pot: Remove cooking grates, drip tray, and heat baffle to expose the fire pot. Look for the igniter tip protruding into the bottom of the pot.
  • Step 2 – Visual inspection: Check if the igniter tip is broken, heavily corroded, or missing. Inspect the igniter wire where it passes through the fire pot wall for signs of melting or charring.
  • Step 3 – Check wiring at control board: Remove the controller and locate the igniter connector on the Cuisinart control board. Ensure it is firmly seated. Look for any in‑line fuse or board‑mounted fuse related to the igniter and inspect it; replace only with the same rating if blown.
  • Step 4 – Test igniter (if you have a meter): With the grill unplugged, disconnect the igniter and measure resistance across its leads. A typical hot rod will show low resistance (tens of ohms). An open circuit (OL) indicates a failed igniter.
  • Step 5 – Replace igniter: If failed, remove the screws securing the fire pot (if needed), slide out the old igniter, and install a compatible Cuisinart hot rod igniter. Route the new wire through the existing grommet and away from hot surfaces, then reconnect to the control board.
  • Step 6 – Test ignition: Reassemble the interior parts, plug in the grill, and start an ignition cycle with an empty fire pot. After 3–5 minutes, you should feel heat at the fire pot and see pellets begin to ignite.
