Possible Causes
Pellet hopper empty, Wet or poor‑quality pellets, Blocked auger or pellet bridge in hopper, Excessive wind blowing out flame
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn the grill off, unplug it, and allow it to cool before clearing pellets or ash.
- Step 1 – Check pellet level and quality: Open the hopper and confirm it is at least half full. Inspect pellets for swelling, crumbling, or a damp feel. Discard any wet or disintegrating pellets and vacuum out the hopper.
- Step 2 – Break pellet bridges: Use a clean, dry tool to stir pellets in the hopper and break up any bridges or clumps that prevent pellets from feeding into the auger intake.
- Step 3 – Clean fire pot: Remove grates, drip tray, and heat baffle. Vacuum ash and unburned pellets from the fire pot and surrounding area. A full fire pot can smother the flame and cause flameouts.
- Step 4 – Restart properly: With the fire pot clean and hopper filled with dry, food‑grade hardwood pellets, plug the grill back in and start a normal ignition cycle. Avoid opening the lid excessively during startup.
- Step 5 – Wind protection: If grilling in strong wind, reposition the grill or use a windbreak. Wind entering the exhaust or air inlets can blow out the flame and trigger Er5.
- Step 6 – If repeated flameouts occur: Inspect the combustion fan and auger operation (see related entries). Weak airflow or inconsistent pellet feed can also cause Er5 and may require fan or auger motor replacement.
