Possible Causes
Failed hot rod igniter, Very low ambient temperature, Wet pellets causing poor combustion, Weak combustion fan airflow
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn the grill off, unplug it, and allow it to cool before inspecting internal components.
- Step 1 – Verify pellets and environment: Ensure the hopper is filled with dry, high‑quality hardwood pellets. In very cold weather, pre‑warm pellets indoors and avoid starting the grill in strong wind.
- Step 2 – Inspect fire pot and igniter: Remove grates, drip tray, and heat baffle. Clean ash and unburned pellets from the fire pot. Confirm that the igniter tip is present and not heavily corroded.
- Step 3 – Test ignition: With the grill reassembled enough for safe operation, plug it in and start an ignition cycle. After 3–5 minutes, check (carefully, from above) for visible flame in the fire pot. If pellets feed but do not ignite, the igniter is likely faulty (see Er4 entry for replacement steps).
- Step 4 – Check combustion fan: Listen for the fan during startup. Weak or no airflow can prevent the fire from establishing and cause Er9. If the fan is not running properly, refer to the combustion fan fault procedure.
- Step 5 – Retry after corrections: Once pellets, igniter, and fan issues are addressed, restart the grill. If Er9 persists despite proper ignition and airflow, the control board’s temperature detection may be faulty and require replacement.
