Possible Causes
Failed igniter (hot rod), Loose igniter wiring at control board, Blown igniter fuse on control board, Shorted igniter touching firepot
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the grill and ensure it is completely cool before working near the firepot or wiring.
- Access igniter: Remove cooking grates, grease tray, and heat shield to expose the firepot. Locate the igniter tube entering the side of the firepot.
- Check wiring: From the controller side, remove the side panel to access the control board. Verify the igniter wires are firmly connected to the correct terminals on the Green Mountain Grills control board.
- Inspect for damage: Look for burnt, broken, or pinched igniter wires along their path from the firepot to the controller.
- Test igniter: Disconnect the igniter from the board and measure resistance across the igniter leads. An open circuit (infinite resistance) indicates a failed hot rod that must be replaced.
- Check fuse: Some GMG boards have an inline or onboard fuse for the igniter circuit. Inspect and replace with the same rating if blown.
- Replace igniter: Remove the mounting screw or bracket holding the igniter in the firepot, slide the old igniter out, feed the new OEM Green Mountain Grills igniter/hot rod through the tube, secure it, and reconnect to the board. Ensure the igniter tip sits slightly inside the firepot.
