Possible Causes

Grease fire in cook chamber, RTD probe exposed to direct flame, Control board overshooting setpoint, Excessive pellet feed due to stuck auger relay

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: If you suspect a grease fire, keep the lid closed, turn the grill off, and disconnect power. Do NOT open the lid until the fire subsides. Keep a fire extinguisher rated for grease fires nearby.

  • Allow to cool: Wait until the grill is completely cool before inspecting.
  • Inspect for grease buildup: Remove grates and grease tray. Clean heavy grease from the tray, drip channels, and bottom of the cook chamber.
  • Check RTD placement: Ensure the RTD probe is properly mounted and not bent into direct flame or touching metal surfaces that overheat.
  • Verify pellet feed: Observe startup to ensure the auger is not continuously feeding pellets beyond normal cycles. If the auger runs constantly, the control board or auger relay may be faulty and require replacement.
  • Recalibrate or replace RTD: If temperatures read abnormally high compared to an external thermometer, the RTD may be faulty and should be replaced.
