Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn the grill OFF, unplug it from power, and allow it to cool completely before working inside the firepot or control area.
Step-by-step checks:
- 1. Verify startup procedure: Confirm the grill is set to SMOKE or IGNITE per the Grilla Grills manual and that the lid is open during ignition. Incorrect startup can trigger ERR1.
- 2. Inspect the firepot: Remove grates and heat diffuser. Check that the firepot is not packed with ash. Vacuum out ash with a metal-safe shop vac. A clogged pot can prevent ignition.
- 3. Check the igniter rod wiring: Locate the igniter rod under the firepot. Follow its wires back to the control board. Ensure the plug is fully seated and wires are not burned, pinched, or broken.
- 4. Test igniter operation: With the firepot exposed, plug the grill back in. Turn to IGNITE/SMOKE and watch the igniter area (do not touch). Within 3–5 minutes, you should see the tip of the igniter glowing red and feel heat. If there is no heat or glow, the igniter is likely failed.
- 5. Check control board fuse (if accessible): Some Grilla Grills control boards have an inline or onboard fuse for the igniter circuit. With power unplugged, inspect and replace a blown fuse with the same rating if present.
- 6. Replace the igniter rod: If the igniter does not heat, remove the retaining screw at the firepot, slide the igniter out, and install a Grilla Grills-compatible hot rod igniter. Route the wires away from hot surfaces and reconnect to the control board.
- 7. Test the grill: Reassemble the firepot and internals, plug in, and run a normal ignition cycle. Confirm pellets feed and ignite without ERR1.
When to call a technician: If a new igniter does not heat or ERR1 persists, the control board igniter circuit may be faulty and should be tested or replaced by a qualified technician.
