Possible Causes

Grease fire in cook chamber, Failed or shorted RTD temperature probe, Stuck auger feeding excessive pellets, Faulty control board temperature regulation

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn the grill OFF, unplug it, and keep the lid closed if you suspect a grease fire. Do not open the lid until flames subside. Have a Class B fire extinguisher nearby; never use water on a grease fire.

Step-by-step checks:

  • 1. Allow full cool-down: Wait until the grill is completely cool before inspecting internal components.
  • 2. Inspect for grease buildup: Remove grates and drip tray. Look for heavy grease accumulation or signs of a recent flare-up. Clean the drip tray, grease channels, and interior surfaces with a scraper and appropriate degreaser.
  • 3. Check the RTD temperature probe: Locate the stainless temperature probe on the inside wall of the cook chamber. Ensure it is clean, not bent, and not coated in heavy carbon. Gently clean with a non-abrasive pad.
  • 4. Inspect probe wiring: Follow the RTD probe wires through the body to the control board. Look for pinched, melted, or frayed insulation. Ensure the connector is fully seated on the control board.
  • 5. Verify auger operation: With the grill empty and cool, power it on and watch the auger during startup. Confirm it cycles on and off rather than running continuously. A stuck relay or jammed auger can overfeed pellets.
  • 6. Replace suspect parts: If the probe is damaged or readings are obviously wrong (e.g., shows very high temp when cold), replace the RTD temperature probe with a Grilla Grills-compatible sensor. If the auger runs constantly or the display shows erratic temps, the control board may need replacement.
  • 7. Test at low temperature: After cleaning and any part replacement, run the grill at a low setpoint (e.g., 225°F) and monitor temperature stability for 30–60 minutes.

When to call a technician: If ERR2 recurs after cleaning and probe replacement, or if the grill continues to overheat, have a technician evaluate the control board and safety circuits.
