Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn the grill OFF, unplug it, and allow it to cool. Do not place hands near the auger while the grill is powered.
Step-by-step checks:
- 1. Confirm pellet level: Ensure the hopper has pellets and they are not swollen or wet. Remove any clumped or swollen pellets and refill with fresh, dry pellets.
- 2. Observe auger operation: With the firepot exposed and hopper partially emptied, plug in and start the grill. Look down into the hopper to see if pellets move. If the auger does not turn, proceed to inspection.
- 3. Check for auger jam: Unplug the grill. Remove pellets from the hopper. Access the auger by removing the hopper guard and auger cover. Look for compacted pellets, screws, or foreign objects jamming the auger.
- 4. Manually rotate auger: Try to turn the auger shaft by hand or with pliers at the motor end. If it will not move, clear the jam by breaking up compacted pellets and vacuuming out debris.
- 5. Inspect auger motor and pin: Verify the motor coupling and shear pin are intact and connecting the motor to the auger shaft. Replace a broken shear pin with the correct Grilla Grills part.
- 6. Check wiring: Follow the auger motor wires to the control board. Ensure the connector is secure and wires are not damaged.
- 7. Replace auger motor if needed: If the auger turns freely by hand but the motor does not run during startup, replace the auger motor with a compatible Grilla Grills unit.
When to call a technician: If ERR4 persists after clearing jams and replacing the motor, the control board auger circuit may be faulty and should be tested by a technician.
