Safety first: If you suspect a grease fire, keep the lid closed, turn the grill off, and unplug it. Do not use water on a grease fire. Use a Class B fire extinguisher if flames escape the chamber.

• Step 1 – Allow full cool‑down: Leave the lid closed until the grill is completely cool. This can take 30–60 minutes.
• Step 2 – Clean grease and ash: Remove grates and drip tray. Scrape and clean all grease channels, drip pan, and grease bucket. Vacuum ash from the firepot and burn area. Built‑up grease is a primary cause of over‑temperature faults.
• Step 3 – Inspect RTD probe: Check that the RTD probe is clean and not directly touching a hot metal shield or flame. Heavy carbon buildup can cause false high readings; gently clean the probe with a non‑abrasive pad.
• Step 4 – Check pellet feed settings: If your Landmann model has adjustable feed or P‑settings, ensure they are set to factory defaults. Excessive feed can cause temperature overshoot.
• Step 5 – Test run: Start the grill on a low setting (e.g., Smoke or 180°F) with an empty cook chamber. Monitor temperature rise. If the grill again overshoots and shows Er4, the RTD or control board may be faulty.
• Step 6 – Replace RTD if needed: If temperatures on a separate oven thermometer differ greatly from the display, replace the RTD probe. If the issue persists, contact a technician for control board diagnosis.
