Possible Causes
Pellet jam in auger tube, Swollen or wet pellets binding auger, Failed auger motor, Sheared auger motor shear pin or coupler
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the grill and ensure there are no hot embers in the firepot before working on the auger system.
- Step 1 – Empty hopper: Scoop out pellets from the hopper into a dry container. Check for signs of moisture or clumping; discard any wet pellets.
- Step 2 – Clear visible jam: Look down into the auger opening from the hopper. Use a wooden dowel (never metal) to gently break up compacted pellets.
- Step 3 – Access auger motor: Remove the side or rear panel to expose the auger motor and gearbox. Inspect for obvious damage or a broken shear pin/coupler between the motor and auger shaft.
- Step 4 – Manual auger rotation: With the motor disconnected, try to rotate the auger shaft by hand or with pliers on the exposed end. If it will not turn, the auger tube is jammed and must be removed and cleaned.
- Step 5 – Remove and clean auger: Detach the auger motor, slide the auger shaft out of the tube, and scrape out compacted pellets and sawdust. Clean the tube thoroughly and lightly sand any rust spots. Reinstall the auger, ensuring it spins freely.
- Step 6 – Test motor: Before reattaching to the auger, briefly power the grill and observe if the motor shaft turns during a feed cycle. If it does not move, replace the auger motor.
- Step 7 – Reassemble and test: Reinstall the motor, refill the hopper with fresh, dry pellets, and run a prime cycle. If Er7 persists, the control board may not be driving the motor correctly and may need replacement.
