Possible Causes
Combustion fan not running or running too low, Excessive pellet buildup in burn pot, Long shutdown cycle with smoldering pellets, Auger tube packed with pellets
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Immediately turn off and unplug the grill if you see smoke from the hopper. Keep the hopper lid closed to limit oxygen. Have a fire extinguisher ready.
- Step 1 – Extinguish safely: Do not open the hopper lid until smoke subsides. If flames appear, use a fire extinguisher rated for wood/pellet fires.
- Step 2 – After cooling, empty hopper: Remove all pellets and inspect for charring. Discard any burned pellets.
- Step 3 – Clean burn pot and auger tube: Remove ash and pellets from the burn pot and auger tube. Ensure the combustion fan is working properly.
- Step 4 – Avoid overfilling: Do not overfill the burn pot with pellets during startup or shutdown. Follow the manufacturer’s shutdown procedure.
- Step 5 – Service fan if needed: If the fan is weak or not running during shutdown, repair or replace the combustion fan assembly.
