Possible Causes
Exposure to rain or high humidity, Pellets left in hopper absorbing moisture, Lack of protective seasoning on grates, Damaged paint or coating
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Ensure the grill is unplugged and dry before working on rusted areas.
- Step 1 – Remove pellets: Empty the hopper and auger if moisture is present. Discard swollen pellets.
- Step 2 – Clean rust: Use a grill brush or fine steel wool to remove surface rust from grates and interior metal. Wipe clean.
- Step 3 – Season grates: Apply a thin coat of high-smoke-point cooking oil to grates and heat to 350–400°F for 30 minutes to create a protective layer.
- Step 4 – Touch up paint: For exterior rust, sand lightly and apply high-temperature grill paint compatible with the original finish.
- Step 5 – Store properly: Use a fitted Louisiana Grills cover and avoid leaving pellets in the hopper between cooks in humid environments.
