Possible Causes
Failed hot rod igniter, Loose or damaged igniter wiring harness, Blown igniter fuse on control board, Faulty main control board
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the grill from power and allow all components to cool completely before opening any panels. Do not work on a hot grill.
- 1. Power reset: Unplug the grill for 5 minutes, then plug back in and try to start again. Sometimes the control board will clear a transient ERR1.
- 2. Inspect the hot rod igniter:
- Remove the cooking grates, drip pan, and heat diffuser to expose the fire pot.
- Look into the fire pot for the igniter tip. It should protrude slightly into the pot and not be broken or burned away.
- If the igniter is cracked, missing, or heavily burned, it likely needs replacement.
- 3. Check igniter wiring:
- Access the wiring under the hopper/control area (remove side or bottom access panel as per Masterbuilt manual).
- Locate the two-wire harness from the igniter to the control board.
- Ensure connectors are fully seated and not corroded or melted.
- Look for pinched or burned wires near the fire pot.
- 4. Test igniter resistance (if you have a multimeter):
- Disconnect the igniter plug from the control board.
- Measure resistance across the igniter leads; most Masterbuilt hot rods read roughly 40–80 Ω. An open circuit (OL) or 0 Ω indicates a bad igniter.
- 5. Replace parts as needed:
- If resistance is out of range or the igniter is visibly damaged, replace the hot rod igniter with a Masterbuilt-compatible part.
- If a known-good igniter still triggers ERR1, the control board or its internal igniter fuse may be faulty and should be replaced as an assembly.
