Possible Causes
Grease fire in cook chamber, Temperature probe shorted or contaminated, Control board temperature sensing circuit failure, Excessive pellet feed causing runaway temperature
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: If you suspect a grease fire, keep the lid closed, unplug the grill, and use a Class B fire extinguisher if needed. Never use water on a grease fire.
- 1. Allow full cool-down: Leave the lid closed until the grill is completely cool. Unplug from power.
- 2. Inspect for grease buildup:
- Remove grates and drip pan.
- Check for heavy grease on the drip tray, in the bottom of the barrel, and in the grease channel.
- Clean all grease with a plastic scraper and non-flammable degreaser. Dry thoroughly.
- 3. Check RTD/temperature probe:
- Locate the internal temperature probe (usually a metal rod on the side wall of the cook chamber).
- Clean off heavy soot or grease with a damp cloth; buildup can cause false high readings.
- Inspect the probe wire where it passes into the body and into the hopper/control area for cuts or melted insulation.
- 4. Verify pellet feed:
- Empty the hopper and check for foreign objects or wet pellets that may cause erratic feeding.
- Confirm the auger is not jammed and that pellets are not piled excessively high in the fire pot.
- 5. Test again:
- Refill with dry pellets, plug in, and start the grill on a low setting.
- If ERR2 returns quickly and the grill is not actually overheating, the temperature probe (RTD) or control board is likely faulty and should be replaced.
