Possible Causes
Hot rod igniter not heating, No pellet feed during startup, Combustion fan not running, Controller timing fault
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the grill and let it cool before inspecting the fire pot and igniter.
- Confirm pellet feed: During a startup attempt, look into the fire pot (with power off afterward) to see if pellets are present. If the pot is empty, troubleshoot the auger motor and feed system.
- Check igniter glow: With the diffuser removed and extreme caution, start the grill and observe the igniter tip in the fire pot. It should glow red within a few minutes. If not, test and replace the igniter as needed.
- Verify fan: Ensure the combustion fan runs during ignition. If not, inspect wiring and fan motor.
- Clean fire pot: Excess ash can insulate pellets from the igniter. Vacuum the fire pot thoroughly.
- Controller reset: After addressing mechanical issues, unplug the grill for 1–2 minutes to reset the controller, then retry ignition following Memphis procedures.
- Replace components if needed: If pellets feed and the fan runs but the igniter never heats, replace the hot rod igniter. If all hardware checks out and IGNITION errors persist, the controller may be mis-timing the sequence and should be replaced.
