Possible Causes
Grease fire, Excessive pellet feed, Blocked exhaust, Faulty temperature sensor reading too high
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Treat any OVER TEMP condition as a potential fire hazard. Turn the grill off, disconnect power, and keep the lid closed until you are sure there is no active flame beyond normal combustion.
- Inspect interior: After cooling, open the lid and check for heavy soot, burned grease, or warped components indicating a flare-up. Clean all grease from drip trays, diffuser, and cook chamber.
- Check exhaust: Ensure the chimney cap is properly adjusted and vents are clear. Remove any foil or obstructions.
- Verify pellet feed: Observe the auger during a low-temp test. If pellets feed excessively, the controller may be overdriving the auger or the auger relay may be stuck. Replace the controller if the auger runs continuously at low settings.
- Sensor check: Compare the grill’s displayed temperature with an independent oven thermometer. If the display is much higher than actual, the internal RTD sensor may be faulty and should be replaced.
- Test again: After cleaning and any repairs, run the grill at a moderate temperature and monitor for stability. If OVER TEMP recurs without obvious cause, contact a qualified technician or Memphis support.
