Possible Causes
Burned out hot rod igniter, Loose igniter connection at control board, Failed igniter fuse or output on main control board, Excessive ash blocking igniter port in firepot
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the grill and ensure the firepot is completely cool before working near the igniter.
- Step 1 – Visual check of firepot: Remove cooking grates and drip tray to access the firepot. Vacuum out all pellets and ash. Confirm that the igniter tip is visible through the small hole in the side or bottom of the firepot and is not buried in ash.
- Step 2 – Inspect igniter wiring: From the underside or rear service panel, locate the hot rod igniter wires running from the firepot to the main control board. Check for burned, pinched, or disconnected wires. Reseat the igniter connector on the control board.
- Step 3 – Test igniter operation (carefully): With the firepot empty and components reinstalled, plug in the grill. Start an ignition cycle with the lid open and watch through the firepot for 3–5 minutes. You should see the igniter tip glow red and feel heat. If there is no glow or heat, stop the cycle and unplug the grill.
- Step 4 – Electrical test (advanced): With the grill unplugged, disconnect the igniter from the board and measure resistance across the igniter leads. A typical hot rod will show low resistance (tens of ohms). An open circuit indicates a failed igniter that must be replaced.
- Step 5 – Replace igniter: Remove the firepot mounting screws and gently pull the firepot up to access the igniter. Loosen the igniter set screw or clip, slide the old igniter out, and feed its wires back through the body. Install a new OEM Monument hot rod igniter, positioning the tip correctly in the firepot hole, secure it, and reconnect to the control board.
- Step 6 – Test: Reassemble the firepot, drip tray, and grates. Run a startup cycle to confirm the igniter glows and Er3 is cleared.
- Note: If the igniter tests good but Er3 persists, the igniter output on the main control board may be faulty and the board may need replacement.
