Possible Causes

Pellet jam in auger tube, Swollen or wet pellets binding auger, Foreign object in hopper or auger, Failed or overheated auger motor

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the grill and ensure there is no active fire in the firepot before working on the auger system.

  • Step 1 – Empty hopper: Scoop or vacuum all pellets out of the Monument hopper. Check for clumps of wet pellets or foreign objects (screws, staples, wood chunks) that could have entered the auger.
  • Step 2 – Clear firepot: Remove grates and drip tray, vacuum out the firepot and surrounding area so no loose pellets remain.
  • Step 3 – Inspect auger motor and shaft: Access the auger motor from the rear or side service panel. Check that the motor mounting bolts are tight and that the auger shaft coupling set screw is secure on the motor output shaft.
  • Step 4 – Manually rotate auger: With the motor disconnected from power, try to rotate the auger shaft by hand (or with pliers on the exposed shaft). If it will not turn, there is a jam in the auger tube.
  • Step 5 – Clear auger jam: Remove the auger motor mounting bolts and slide the motor off the shaft. Pull the auger out of the tube from the hopper side. Break up and remove any compacted pellets or debris from the tube. Clean thoroughly and dry the tube if moisture is present.
  • Step 6 – Reassemble and test: Reinstall the auger into the tube, reconnect the motor and coupling, and secure all fasteners. Refill the hopper with fresh, dry pellets only. Plug in the grill and run a prime or feed cycle to confirm smooth pellet delivery and that Er4 is cleared.
  • When to replace parts: If the auger motor hums but does not turn even with a free auger, or if it overheats and trips repeatedly, replace the Monument auger motor assembly.
