Possible Causes
Grease fire in drip tray, Excessive pellet feed due to stuck auger relay, RTD probe reading too low causing controller to overfire, Cooking with lid open at high setpoint
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: If you suspect a grease fire, keep the lid closed, turn the grill off, and disconnect power. Do NOT use water to extinguish a grease fire.
- Step 1 – Allow to cool: Leave the lid closed until flames subside and the grill cools significantly. Once safe, open the lid carefully.
- Step 2 – Inspect for grease buildup: Remove grates and drip tray. Look for heavy grease accumulation and signs of flare‑up. Clean the drip tray, grease channel, and bucket thoroughly.
- Step 3 – Check RTD probe: Ensure the temperature probe is clean and not coated in thick carbon, which can cause inaccurate readings. Clean gently.
- Step 4 – Examine pellet feed: If the firepot is overflowing with pellets, there may be a control or auger issue. Clear excess pellets and ash. Run a test at a low setpoint to see if the auger cycles normally.
- Step 5 – Operating practice: Avoid running the grill at maximum temperature with the lid open for extended periods, as this can cause runaway temperatures near the RTD.
- Step 6 – Controller check: If HOT errors occur repeatedly under normal use, the main control board or RTD may be misreading temperature and should be tested and possibly replaced.
